Seven years of shipping efficiency lost at sea

The Government’s seven years of squandering opportunities to create efficient coastal freight movement has been highlighted today in a new report, Labour’s Transport spokesperson Sue Moroney says.

“The New Zealand Shipping Federation’s paper Full Steam Ahead is a wake-up call for a Government that has dozed off on getting the movement of freight right.

“The Shipping Federation’s call for an integrated, efficient freight transport system was answered by Labour with our 2008 Seachange strategy – which was immediately scrapped by the incoming National Government.

“National has had their head in the sand ever since.

“As an exporting nation with a desperate need to improve opportunities in our regions, we must get this right. National’s blinkered approach is hurting our economy and reducing coastal shipping as a viable option for both moving freight and being available for emergency response.

“Just last week the coastal shipping fleet reduced by one ship and more reductions are on the cards, unless the Government acts,” Sue Moroney says.
