Last year the National Government announced its plans to sell 2,500 Housing New Zealand homes in Christchurch. The suburbs of Riccarton, Bryndwr and Shirely have been singled out for the sell off. We are opposed to this. It makes not one bit of sense to sell off our housing stock in the middle of a housing crisis. It is also a failed scheme - the Government has not been able to find local buyers other parts of the country.
Riccarton has been singled out as a target suburb. This is ridiculous. We all know there are some fantastic new homes in the Riccarton area and selling them makes no sense. However, we are not convinced it will stop with these suburbs - we have been hearing from people in Hornby and Sydenham that they too have received letters saying their house could possibly be sold.
Later this month the Government will take the next step in the sell-off. As the Member of Parliament representing Riccarton, Megan Woods will take a strong stand against any attempts to sell these homes.
But we need to take this stand together. The first step in us doing this as a team is to come along to a meeting and talk with others about what we can do.
The speakers at the meeting are:
- Megan Woods, Member of Parliament for Wigram
- Anthony Rimell, Local Pastor at Riccarton Baptist Church
- Gail Scott, HNZC Resident and local Christchurch activist
