The National Government is looking to reinstate the cruel practice of live animal exports.
New Zealanders were rightly shocked by the appalling conditions animals endured in live export practices, which put our international reputation regarding animal welfare at risk. That’s why Labour banned live cattle export by sea in April 2023.
The majority of New Zealanders want to protect the ban Labour put in place, and more than 57,000 people have signed a petition against its reinstatement. Now, the Government is ignoring these voices.
Click below to send an email to Minister of Agriculture Todd McClay, Associate Minister of Agriculture Andrew Hoggard, and Prime Minister Christopher Luxon and tell them to rule out the reinstatement of live exports by sea immediately.
The Government is not adequately consulting with Kiwis on their plans to reinstate live export of cattle by sea. Make sure your voice is heard by sending them an email using the button above.
Other countries like the UK and Australia have followed New Zealand’s lead and moved to ban live exports. Much of our international trade relies on us maintaining good animal welfare standards and reinstating live exports is too great a risk. National should do the right thing now and rule it out.
Reinstating this practice will only take New Zealand backwards.
