Come along and find out more about the Whanganui Community Action Network.
The CAN is a method of community organising that’s grown out of political movements in the US and UK, via Australia and is now running successfully in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.
At its heart is the phrase ‘action is oxygen to an organisation’. Simply put, people join organisations to do stuff, whether it’s fighting for important issues, lobbying decision makers or getting out and helping their communities. People want to see tangible change and be able to say they’ve helped.
We're looking for people and organisations that align with our values (fairness, equality, sustainability and community spirit), and there is no pressure to be a member of a political party. We're a group of likeminded people, getting together to help others out.
We’ll be organising monthly volunteer meet ups, where you can come along and choose what activities we want to do. We’ll be led by you in what you want to do.
Along with the meet ups, there’ll be monthly volunteer activities where we can use our collective power to help out in the community.
This could be anything. The beauty of it is we get to choose what we want to do. Some ideas:
- Helping at the City Mission
- Working bee’s for community groups
- Delivering meals on wheels
- Beach clean-ups (when the weathers better!)
- To helping older folk in the community etc.
