David Parker

David Parker is Labour’s Deputy Leader and Finance Spokesperson, and is a Labour list MP.

Born in Roxburgh in 1960, David grew up in Dunedin and was awarded a BCom/LLB at the University of Otago.

In business he took an interest in innovation. He worked in the agri-biotechnology field and helped start up bio-tech businesses, including innovative BLIS Technologies, as well as in more traditional industries. He is an experienced manager and director.

He was a co-founder of the Dunedin Community Law Centre and a litigation and managing partner in Dunedin law firm Anderson Lloyd.

David became an MP in 2002 when he won the previously safe National seat of Otago and he was appointed to Cabinet in 2005.

Passionate about the outdoors and a recreational tramper, David Parker wants to lift New Zealand’s environmental performance. He was nominated by the Listener magazine as environmentalist of the year for his work as Minister of Energy and Climate Change. He pioneered New Zealand’s emissions trading scheme, described by many as the most significant environmental reform in decades.

He has also been Attorney-General, and been Minister of Transport, State Services and Land Information.

His main area of interest is how to grow the New Zealand economy through innovation-led exporting.

He wants economic growth to provide for everybody, prevent extremes of rich and poor emerging in New Zealand and keep essential services for the community.
