Meet Helen White

"For me, the Government is the best place to create change so that everyone gets a fair chance, regardless of who their parents are, or how much money they have."

Helen White is a Barrister, with over 25 years’ experience in employment law and has become a leading voice in advocating for workers’ rights. Over this time she has worked for a variety of unions including EPMU and the Amalgamated Workers Union. Helen believes that employment is a fundamental right, it allows people freedom, choice and to contribute to their community, which is why she fights for equality and fairness in the workplace.

Since moving there in 1989, Helen has been involved in the Mount Albert community. Her children attended local schools including Balmoral School and Mount Albert Grammar. She loves Mount Albert’s diverse small businesses and its vibrant communities – each with a unique sense of belonging.

Helen is honoured to represent Labour as MP for Mt Albert. As a long-term resident, she understands the needs of members of her community. She intends to build on the hard work of Jacinda Ardern in supporting an electorate where families, businesses, workers, seniors and young people can thrive.

Helen is dedicated to ensuring that all New Zealanders have access to a system that is built to enable them to flourish. She knows that a decent job, a good wage, access to quality housing, healthcare and a fair education system are basic rights that New Zealanders all deserve to enjoy.

Helen is honoured to be Labour's Spokesperson for Prevention of Family and Sexual Violence, and she recognises the huge importance of this portfolio as well as the incredible work done by advocates and survivors in this space. She is also Opposition Spokesperson for the Community and Voluntary Sector.
