Meet Rakesh Naidoo

"Every New Zealander deserves the right to live with dignity, regardless of where they come from.

Rakesh Naidoo, is a respected public sector leader with extensive experience building partnerships across government, community, sport, faith and ethnic organisations to strengthen social cohesion, trust and confidence.

Born and raised in South Africa during apartheid, Rakesh experienced firsthand the effects of discrimination and inequality. These experiences shaped his lifelong commitment to advancing human rights, fostering understanding across diverse communities, and ensuring all people are treated with dignity and respect.

Since immigrating to New Zealand more than 25 years ago, Rakesh has held a range of leadership roles focused on community engagement, social development, and public service. Across his roles, he has led national initiatives to strengthen relationships with diverse communities and played a key role in supporting responses to significant national events, including the Canterbury earthquakes, the Christchurch terrorist attacks, and the government's COVID-19 community response initiatives.

In 2023, Rakesh was appointed a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit (MNZM) for services to New Zealand Police and ethnic communities. He has held governance roles with organisations such as New Zealand Football, Sport New Zealand, Gandhi Nivas Family Harm Services, and the Wellington Interfaith Council.

Rakesh was previously seconded to the NZ Human Rights Commission, where he worked alongside the Race Relations Commissioner as a Principal Advisor. Throughout his career, he has worked to amplify diverse voices, build trust between communities and institutions, and promote a more inclusive Aotearoa New Zealand.
