"Driven by my values of social justice, inclusiveness and fairness, it’s a privilege to serve Palmerston North.
Tangi is a proven and strong advocate for Palmerston North, with established connections to his community and experience serving our city in education, local and central government.
Born and raised in Palmerton North, Tangi trained and worked in the city as a teacher before being elected to the Palmerston North City Council, the first elected member of Pasifika heritage. He served for 10 years and was Deputy Mayor until elected to Parliament as the MP for Palmerston North in 2020.
On the City Council, Tangi prioritised working with people across the political spectrum. Combined with his focus on policy and practice, he made a significant contribution to the areas of multiculturalism, education, resource management, racing, and more.
As the MP for Palmerston North, Tangi has been committed to being out in the community and advocating for our people and city. His priorities have been fighting for access to good local healthcare and housing.
An effective local campaigner, Tangi has successfully fought to keep Te Ahu a Turanga - Manawatū Tararua Gorge Replacement Highway Toll free, expand Capital Connection train services, and has advocated to keep local rural school bus routes.
Tangi is the Deputy Shadow Leader of the House and Labour’s spokesperson for Transport, State Owned Enterprises, Local Government, and Racing.
As the MP for Palmerston North, Tangi will keep fighting for Palmy to be a thriving city with good jobs that pay well, healthcare you can rely on, and affordable housing for all.
