Release: Release: Bishop’s spin can’t hide National’s failure to build
29 July 2026
National’s latest press release is an attempt to bury another housing failure.
“Chris Bishop is claiming credit for 3000 social homes in Auckland, but his Government has actually built just 533 across the whole country,” Labour housing spokesperson Kieran McAnulty said.
“That's not delivery, it’s creative accounting. Perhaps Chris Bishop has confused a calculator with a bulldozer.
“If their housing record was any good, National would lead with the number of homes they have funded and built. Instead, Bishop has lumped together every home that's changed hands to make his numbers look bigger.
“This Government has slashed Kāinga Ora's build programme, sold public homes and watched construction grind to a halt. Now it's trying to spin its way out of the mess.
“Families on the waiting list don't care how many times Chris Bishop recycles the same homes in a press release. They care about getting a roof over their heads.
"Chris Bishop has gone from Housing Minister to Head of Government Spin. He can't build enough homes, so he's trying to build a better headline instead,” Kieran McAnulty said.
