Release: Cost of living keeps getting worse under Luxon
16 June 2026
New Stats NZ data shows the cost of food and fuel has gone up sharply over the last year.
"National promised they’d fix the cost of living, but they have made it worse. Families are having to choose between food and fuel, and Christopher Luxon and Nicola Willis are too out of touch to do anything about it," Labour finance and economy spokesperson Barbara Edmonds said.
"Price increases are hitting Kiwi households hard. Mince is up 15 percent over the last year, white bread is up 40 percent, and chocolate is up 16 percent.
“Fuel costs continue to squeeze families and businesses, with diesel up more than 75 percent over the last year, and petrol up nearly 30 percent.
"Families are doing it tough, and National has no answers. The budget was their last chance to show New Zealanders they understand, but instead they have no plan and no relief. Just more cuts to the services people rely on, while costs keep climbing.
"Kiwis can't afford another three years of this.
“Labour has a plan to put more money back in people's pockets, with three free doctor's visits, a $20 public transport fare cap, and more policy announcements soon to help people with the high cost of living,” Barbara Edmonds said.
