Release: Everything costs more under National
16 October 2026
Food and fuel prices have risen once again under National.
“Christopher Luxon promised to fix the cost of living. Three years on, families continue to pay more at the pump and at the checkout every week,” Labour finance and economy spokesperson Barbara Edmonds said.
“At the supermarket, grocery prices continue to soar. Since National took office, bread has gone up a staggering 73 percent. Butter has gone up over 70 percent. And mince is 35 percent more expensive. These are the basics families can’t go without.
“At the pump, petrol has gone up 24 percent over the past year. Diesel is up 56 percent.
“Food and fuel are just part of the everyday costs Kiwis are facing. Power, rates, the doctor, getting the kids to school. Under National, it’s all costing more.
“Labour will make helping Kiwis with their bills our number one priority.
“We have a practical plan to get the cost of living under control, by capping public transport fares, providing three free GP visits a year, freezing fuel tax, and cracking down on price gouging.
“We’ll make the big supermarkets open up wholesale supply so smaller stores can compete.
“And we’ll bring back fresh, locally made school lunches, saving parents money.
“In three years all National has delivered is more cuts, more chaos, and higher prices. In fact, a typical family in Auckland with two children is paying around $6,000 more a year thanks to National.
“New Zealand can't afford another three years of National.
“In three weeks New Zealanders will have a choice. Better is possible, and better starts now,” Barbara Edmonds said.
