Release: Faster, cheaper Auckland train trips under Labour
14 September 2026
Under a Labour Government, Aucklanders will not only get where they’re going faster, they’ll pay less to get there too.
“The City Rail Link is a huge step forward for Auckland. Aucklanders can finally experience faster, more frequent and more connected train services,” Labour transport spokesperson Tangi Utikere said.
“But faster public transport means little if people can’t afford to use it.
“That’s why Labour will cap public transport fares at $20 a week in Auckland. Once you hit the cap, the rest of your trips that week are free.
“This election is about the cost of living. Christopher Luxon promised to fix it but he’s made it worse. He’s happy to cut the ribbon on the CRL but he made public transport more expensive when he got rid of half price fares for students, and ended fare subsidies for children and young people.
“Aucklanders can’t afford another three years of National swooping in for the photo ops but not delivering on what they need.
“On average, public transport users will save $25 a week under a Labour government.
“Labour will make sure Aucklanders get the full benefit of the investment in the CRL, faster journeys and cheaper fares,” Tangi Utikere said.
