Release: Housing under National goes from bad to worse
National has finally admitted they have only built 45 new public houses, despite Christopher Luxon’s claim they have built 7000 since they came into office.
“Chris Bishop has finally admitted only 45 social houses have been built by his government,” Labour Housing spokesperson Kieran McAnulty said.
“Perhaps he may want to inform Christopher Luxon who said yesterday in the House that 7000 homes had been built.
“His admission today more than rules out Nicola Willis’ promise of building 1000 new houses a year in Auckland. In fact it’s the opposite in our biggest city as Kainga Ora has cancelled 1527 houses.
“I’d say Christopher Luxon and Nicola Willis are well placed to issue a ‘please explain’ to their Minister of Housing for such a dire result.
“It’s not just taking away chances for people to put down roots and have a safe, warm place to call home, the lack of building is tanking the construction industry. The Government has overseen 18,000 job losses in just over 18 months and the number of construction companies building public homes in New Zealand has more than halved.
“National bugger housing up every time they come to Government, they’re breaking promises and making everything worse,” Kieran McAnulty said.
