Release: Labour leader challenges Luxon to debate the health crisis
19 October 2026
Chris Hipkins is calling for Christopher Luxon to front up on the state of New Zealand’s health system.
“Our health system is in crisis. People are waiting too long for care, doctors and nurses are under enormous pressure, and families are worried about what happens when someone they love gets sick,” Chris Hipkins said.
“This is one of the biggest issues facing New Zealanders, so I’m challenging Christopher Luxon to a debate on the crisis in our health system.
“Let’s hear from the people who are being denied the care they need. Let’s hear from the health professionals who are at breaking point. And let’s answer their questions about what this Government has done, and what needs to change.
“New Zealanders deserve straight answers about the state of their health system and what the future holds.
“I’m up for that. I’m ready to front up, answer questions and talk about the issues that matter to patients, families and the people working on the frontline.
“Now I challenge National’s leader to join me.
“Front up and explain why hiring only 54 additional nurses is enough, why parents should be put through the stress of waiting longer for their children to get cancer treatment, and why our emergencies departments are at breaking point.
“Christopher Luxon can’t keep avoiding the issue while New Zealanders struggle to get the healthcare they need. If he thinks his government is getting it right, he should be prepared to defend its record,” Chris Hipkins said.
