Release: Labour will launch independent review into FENZ
23 September 2026
A Labour Government will initiate an independent review into Fire and Emergency New Zealand’s funding and operations to ensure it has the resources needed to keep firefighters safe and respond effectively to emergencies.
“Our firefighters put their lives on the line every day to keep communities safe. Being properly backed to do their jobs is the least they deserve,” Labour’s internal affairs spokesperson Lemauga Lydia Sosene.
“Labour backs our firefighters. National has had three years to get behind our emergency services but instead, they cut $50 million a year from FENZ, gave nearly 80% pay rises to the FENZ Board while refusing to give firefighters a fair deal.
“The situation at FENZ is untenable. Equipment is failing, upgrades have been delayed and firefighters are feeling devalued. It is high time action was taken.
“Labour recognises the dangerous working conditions firefighters face. We will extend presumptive occupational cancer cover for firefighters so those diagnosed can access the immediate healthcare they need without having to prove it was from firefighting.
“We will also make Kieran McAnulty’s members bill government policy - extending ACC cover to volunteer firefighters who are currently not covered for work-related illness or injuries.
“Kiwis can’t afford another three years of cuts to the fire service they rely on in times of need. Labour is backing our firefighters to do what they do best – serving and rescuing our communities,” Lemauga Lydia Sosene said.
