Release: Luxon continues to fail New Zealanders
08 September 2026
Christopher Luxon has confirmed New Zealand can’t afford another three years of National, as his Government continues to miss its own targets.
Kiwis are seeing tens of thousands more on Jobseeker, higher unemployment and a health system in crisis.
“Kiwis can’t afford another three years of Luxon’s failures,” Labour campaign chair Kieran McAnulty said.
“Jobseeker numbers have surged by tens of thousands more on their watch, with National set to miss their own target by almost 80,000 people – the equivalent of the population of Palmerston North.
“National promised to grow the economy and get people into work. Instead, unemployment is at an 11-year high, businesses liquidations are at a 15-year high and tens of thousands more New Zealanders are relying on Jobseeker. We’re also seeing a historic level of homelessness.
“Luxon promised New Zealanders shorter hospital wait times, yet on his watch, EDs are swamped, hospitals are under huge staffing pressures and only 54 new nurses have been hired.
“Labour has a plan to get people into work and invest in a health system that delivers quality, affordable care. Be it through Labour’s expanded apprenticeship boost or guaranteed job offers for graduate nurses – we’re putting Kiwis first.
“It’s clear National can’t campaign on their track record so have desperately resorted to lies and scaremongering about Labour.
“Come November, Kiwis have a choice: more cuts and failure under National, or a Labour Government that backs a more affordable New Zealand,” Kieran McAnulty said.
