Release: Modern Slavery Bill progresses after Labour forces action
29 April 2026
A Members’ Bill to tackle modern slavery has passed its first reading in Parliament, after Labour won agreement to prioritise it.
“Modern slavery has no place in New Zealand or in the supply chains we rely on. For too long, action has been delayed - we have changed that,” Labour MP Camilla Belich said.
“Labour secured a commitment from National to prioritise the Modern Slavery Bill as part of negotiations for support of the India Free Trade Agreement.
“This Bill will require large businesses to report on how they identify and address modern slavery in their supply chains, establish a public register, and strengthen support for victims.
“It also gives the Human Rights Commission a formal role and lays the groundwork for tougher action, including a potential Anti-Slavery Commissioner.
“New Zealand has lagged behind partners like the UK and EU. We made commitments in our trade deals, and this Bill is about finally delivering on them.
“I’m proud Parliament has come together to take a stand against exploitation, and grateful to the advocates, organisations, and businesses who’ve driven this change,” Camilla Belich said.
