Release: More talk from National on supermarkets
27 August 2025
National is tinkering around the edges of supermarkets with yet another policy announcement that won’t do anything to immediately ease the cost of living.
“Nicola Willis has had almost two years, yet she is still dithering over options to improve competition in the grocery sector. A fast-track regime for supermarkets makes sense, but it won’t make any immediate difference for New Zealanders who will keep paying high prices at the checkout today,” Labour finance spokesperson Barbara Edmonds said.
“Soundbites don’t put food on the table, shoes on feet or petrol in cars. New Zealanders are tired of hearing the same old phrase from the Government – that things are tough – with little action to help.
“Kiwis still won’t see their grocery bills coming down for years under National. Nicola Willis still doesn’t have a timeline for when a new player could come into the market.
“Labour was serious about more competition in the grocery sector and laid the groundwork for this.
“National talked a big game on cost of living and haven’t delivered. They have no idea what most people and small businesses are really going through and no plan to turn things around,” Barbara Edmonds said.
