Release: National fails its fiscal WOF
30 September 2026
National has been in charge for nearly three years and warning lights are flashing everywhere.
“If this Government were taking its WOF today, it would fail,” said Labour finance spokesperson Barbara Edmonds said.
“Nicola Willis told New Zealanders to judge National on the economy. Well, the results are in.
“Prices are up. Unemployment is up. Public services have been cut. And hundreds of millions of dollars have been wasted.
“National promised to bring down the cost of living. Instead, it has made it worse.
“Prices are rising twice as fast as pay. Pay has gone up 2% while prices have gone up 4.1%. Kiwis are working hard and falling behind.
“171,000 Kiwis are unemployed and those still in work are being squeezed by higher power bills, higher fuel costs and higher rates.
“Power bills are up 25% since National took office, seeing a doctor costs 21% more, and Auckland households are paying an average of $800 more towards their rates each year.
“That’s hundreds of dollars disappearing from the family budget before you’ve even paid the mortgage, bought the groceries or taken the kids to the doctor.
“While families are paying more, National has been cutting the services they rely on. Thousands of public service jobs have gone, including jobs in education, health and other frontline services.
“Growth is half what was forecast, businesses are closing at the fastest rate in 15 years - thousands of Kiwis are giving up and heading to Australia.
“The warning lights are flashing, the wheels are coming off and National has run out of road. Come 7 November, Christopher Luxon should be ready to call a taxi,” Barbara Edmonds said.
