Release: National hides its real plan for Kiwis
10 September 2026
National’s own Budget papers have exposed the tax hikes and deeper cuts it has been considering behind closed doors.
“Christopher Luxon is promising ‘no new taxes’ in public while his government has been getting advice on an $8 billion GST hike in private,” Labour campaign chair Kieran McAnulty said.
“They even got advice on suspending contributions to the Super Fund, alongside billions more in cuts.
“So what else isn’t Christopher Luxon telling New Zealanders?
“Will he rule out increasing GST after the election? Is he going to continue to let our health system decline? What secret cuts has his government been working on?
“They cut emergency housing, putting unprecedented numbers of people on the street, because they needed to money to fill the holes in their budgets.
“National has spent this campaign inventing secret Labour policies. Today we got a look at what they’ve actually been hiding.
“This is the real National plan Kiwis need to worry about. Higher costs, deeper cuts, and putting our future savings at risk.
“Christopher Luxon has broken too many promises to be given the benefit of the doubt. If these things aren’t part of his plan, he should rule them out today.
“New Zealand can’t afford another three years of National - when they say no new taxes what they really mean is more cuts, more chaos and higher prices,” Kieran McAnulty said.
