Release: National hides more job cuts until after the election
12 October 2026
National is cutting more public service jobs and won’t say how many, or what services will be affected, until after the election.
“Christopher Luxon is making more savage cuts to public services to help pay for his bad choices, like tax breaks for tobacco companies and ferries that were never delivered,” Labour public services spokesperson Camilla Belich said.
“Today we learned that staff at the Ministry for Cities, Environment and Transport are facing a restructure, but the ministry won’t say how many jobs are at risk or what services could be cut.
“Christopher Luxon should not be ramming through more cuts this close to an election. The voters should decide if they want a Government that cuts or invests in public services.
“National needs to front up right now and tell New Zealanders exactly how many jobs and what services are at risk. We have asked repeatedly what jobs are at risk and the Government won’t say.
“This one ministry is responsible for housing, transport, and the environment. Cutting its staff means fewer people working on things Kiwis care about.
“National has already cut thousands of jobs, and Nicola Willis has 8,700 more lined up all across New Zealand. This has hurt the economy, businesses and our communities.
“We know they will go even further if re-elected. New Zealand cannot afford three more years of cuts, chaos and higher prices,” Camilla Belich said.
