Release: National makes firefighters pay for its cuts
28 August 2026
It’s been revealed National’s cuts mean firefighters are not getting the upgrades they need to keep communities safe.
“National is showing that nothing is safe from its cuts, not nurses, not hospitals, and now not even the fire service,” Labour’s internal affairs spokesperson Lemauga Lydia Sosene said.
“Firefighters put their lives on the line every day to keep New Zealanders safe. They deserve the equipment and support they need to do their jobs safely.
“Firefighters already know the reality: fire trucks breaking down, protective gear wearing out, faulty ladders making responses harder, and recruitment courses being scrapped.
“Now National is kicking essential upgrades down the road because it can’t get its books in order.
“Firefighters shouldn’t have to pay the price for National’s cuts. New Zealanders deserve a Government that backs our firefighters and invests in keeping communities safe.
“Kiwis cannot afford another three years of National,” Lemauga Lydia Sosene said.
