Release: National’s energy plan an absolute fizzer
02 October 2026
National has had three years to bring power bills down. Instead, Simeon Brown’s big plan is more reviews, more deregulation and more promises to fix things later.
“Kiwis are sick of being told cheaper power is just around the corner. National has had three years to deliver, and power bills are still hurting households,” Labour energy spokesperson Megan Woods said.
“After three years in Government, Simeon Brown should be delivering cheaper electricity, not another grab-bag of ideas and excuses.
“This is not a plan to bring power bills down. It’s an admission National hasn’t got a clue how to do it.
“Families are cutting back, people are rationing power, and pensioners are struggling to keep warm. Meanwhile, National is offering more reviews and working groups instead of relief.
“Labour has already announced SolarSaver to help Kiwis access solar energy power and cut their bills. We’ll also ban price gouging so electricity companies can’t rip consumers off.
“And after three years in office, Simeon Brown is still promising to review lines charges. Three years, and he’s still reviewing the problem instead of fixing it.
“National talks about investment and new generation but at the same time they’re pushing ahead with an LNG import facility and rolling back the settings that gave New Zealand a clear long-term direction on clean energy.
“New Zealand needs reliable, affordable power that gives businesses confidence to invest, grow and create good jobs. Instead, National is offering more of the same: more promises, more deregulation and more excuses.
“National has had three years to get this right. Kiwis can’t afford another three years of waiting,” Megan Woods said.
