National is shutting the door on New Zealanders seeking justice for the damage caused by climate change. 

“Christopher Luxon has decided that you shouldn’t be able to seek justice through the courts if you are affected by the impacts of climate change,” Labour’s justice spokesperson Camilla Belich said. 

"This sets a deeply concerning precedent. National has changed the rules so a case currently before the courts cannot proceed, preventing the judiciary from having its say. 

“If climate change damages your home, your livelihood or your whenua, you should have the right to have your day in court. National is saying you shouldn't. 

“Climate change is a global problem, but that doesn’t excuse inaction here in New Zealand. Labour will repeal this Bill,” Camilla Belich said. 

“This is another example of an out-of-touch Prime Minister who is failing to take action on climate change,” Labour’s climate change spokesperson Deborah Russell said. 

“New Zealanders deserve a Government that takes climate change seriously, not one that changes the rules to serve themselves.”
