Release: The Cost of Luxon hits $6,000+ a year
13 October 2026
Christopher Luxon has left the typical Kiwi family thousands of dollars a year worse off and there’s more pain to come.
“He promised to fix the cost of living. Three years on, a typical Auckland family with two kids is paying $6,302 more a year just to get by," Labour Campaign Chair Kieran McAnulty said.
“That’s more than $120 a week being swallowed up by higher prices for food, petrol, power, rates, healthcare and getting the kids to school.
“National scrapped free public transport for kids, brought back prescription charges and increased more than 30 fees and levies. Families are paying the price every day.
“They’re talking about more ‘reprioritisation’. Kiwis deserve to know what that means for the services they rely on. The only cuts they’ve owned up to are in welfare and foreign aid, and even their coalition partners can’t agree on those.
“Christopher Luxon promised people they would be better off. Instead, the weekly shop costs more, the power bill is higher and filling up the car costs more. And National wants to keep going.
“Labour has put our plan on the table, including three free GP visits a year, scrapping prescription charges, making public transport cheaper and freezing fuel tax for three years.
“Families are already paying an extra $6,000 a year under National. They shouldn’t have to pay for another three years of the same.
“Kiwis are being stung and they’ve had a gutsful – we can’t afford another three years of National,” Kieran McAnulty said.
