Release: Willis' fiscal mystery: where will she cut first?
09 October 2026
National continues to refuse to tell New Zealanders exactly where its planned cuts will land.
“Welcome to Nicola Willis’s fiscal mystery: we don’t know what she’ll cut, but we know there will be cuts,” Labour Campaign Chair Kieran McAnulty said.
“Nicola Willis wants New Zealanders to believe National can promise everything, spend less and somehow make the numbers add up.
“New Zealanders have seen this horror movie before.
“National went into government pledging to fix the cost of living instead all it’s done is cut jobs, put the brakes on growth and make more empty promises.
“Kiwis are skipping meals, putting food back on the shelves at supermarkets and struggling to fill the tank.
“Labour is the only party with a real plan to tackle the cost of living. We have put our plan on the table. It is costed and it is funded. We have shown New Zealanders what we will do and how we will pay for it.
“National wants to keep the detail behind closed doors and hope no one asks the obvious question: what are you going to cut?
“National has broken so many promises before. And when the numbers don’t add up, it is New Zealanders who are left to pay the price,” Kieran McAnulty said.
